Hello Spring!

March 29, 2017

The biathlon season is over!! The snow is melting!! I don't have to put on a race bib anytime soon!! After a long race season, it is nice to start thinking about spring and warmer weather. Later this week I'll be heading out to Montana for about a week of adventuring. I'm hoping to get in a ton of rock climbing, trail running, hiking, and skiing while I'm out there. All activities that I haven't been able to do for the past 5 months..I'm so excited!

If you haven't seen my Season Edit yet, check it out below!

Earlier this week were our final races of the season, US Biathlon Nationals. I knew going into these races that it would be tough, my body was pretty much done with racing and my immune system was still recovering. The Sprint race went poorly, missing 3 shots and placing 6th...but then I redeemed myself in the Pursuit only missing 2 shots and moving up to 3rd place, my first Senior National medal! I was happy with that performance. The final race was a Mass Start, and my body was really tired, I shot well with only 1 miss but was not skiing very fast and finished in 5th place. I was relieved the season was over once I crossed that finish line though!

The most exciting thing that's happened this weekend was that the US Biathlon Women hosted our very first "Girls with Guns" event! Thanks to my teammate Emily Dreissigacker who created the event, we rounded up almost 100 girls ranging from age 8-18 to learn more about biathlon and try out shooting a biathlon rifle at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. We were so excited to see how many girls were interested in learning our sport, it was a fun day! If you want to see more photos from the event, click here. If you want to see a news story on the event, click here.

What a turn out! So happy to see all of these girls psyched about biathlon!

Well, I don't have too much going on for a while. I will be doing more climate change presentations with a few schools through Protect Our Winters, which I'm excited about. If you're interested in having me come in and talk about biathlon or climate change, click here.

The 2017/18 season (OLYMPIC SEASON!) begins May 2nd! I'll be back up in Lake Placid training at the Olympic Training Center again, and the official team nominations will be at some point this week. I want to say thank you to my sponsors from this past season; US Biathlon, Rossignol, One Way Sport USA, HWK USA, FinnSisu, Old Forge Fitness, Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company, Giant Bicycles, Blizzard MFG, Helmer's Fuel, DiOrio's Supermarket, Adirondack Homes & Real Estate, Ozzie's Coffee Bar, Enchanted Forest Water Safari, and Adirondack Accents.

If you're reading this and have any interest in supporting my upcoming biathlon season, please feel free to contact me! I would love to have you join my team. If you'd like to keep following me during my spring break, check out my Instagram (@maddie_phaneuf) and Facebook Page. Thanks a lot everyone!
